HOW GREEN IS MONOLITH?

Meat, CO2 and climate change – these are the first three terms that come to mind when you think of “sustainability”. As a manufacturer of charcoal grills, we are aware of the responsibility we carry on our shoulders. This is why since our founding we have dedicated ourselves to the challenge of making the world around MONOLITH as sustainable as possible. Not least because the topic is also a personal concern for Managing Director Matthias Otto and his team. But how exactly do we take care of energy efficiency, sustainability, and CO2 neutrality? The answer is threefold.

1. The Grill

While many gas and charcoal barbecues wear out after just a few years (or even months) and have to be disposed of in case of doubt, every MONOLITH Kamado is a purchase for life. The ceramic body lasts forever without external influence, while the high-quality stainless steel fittings, as well as the new gaskets of the Pro Series 2.0 do not rust even after years in the open air.

In addition, as a ceramic barbecue the MONOLITH is extremely charcoal efficient because the energy produced during combustion is very effectively converted into usable heat, absorbed by the ceramic, and stored there over a long cooking time. 

2. The Charcoal

When choosing the right charcoal, quality, durability, efficiency and flavour are the most important factors. With these aspects in mind, we have developed MONOLITH barbecue charcoal together with an innovative German company. The company mainly produces charcoal as a feed additive, which is why this charcoal meets the highest standards of purity and climate-neutral production. For example, our charcoal is made exclusively from sustainably sourced oak wood from certified German forestry.

In addition, all stages of the production process are energy-optimised: The resulting gas powers a combined heat and power plant, while the waste heat is diverted and used to dry the raw material. The fact that the charcoal goes out quickly when the grill is closed and can be reused afterwards also contributes to its sustainability, of course.

3. The Barbecue

We encourage all MONOLITH owners to consider both versatility and high quality food with provenance. Especially but not exclusively fish and meat. With its different cooking methods and huge range of accessories, vegetables and side dishes can be prepared more creatively and animals can be utilised more holistically.

Use the wok crown, pizza stone or a Dutch oven and turn side dishes or leftovers into delicious main courses – the possibilities are endless, a MONOLITH can do much more than just sausages and steaks. So to those who aspire to cook food in a sustainable way and try out a wide variety of dishes, MONOLITH is the grill that fulfils these wishes.

Sustainability can be achieved in many ways and we strive to follow as many of these paths as possible – out of conviction, with respect and responsibility. In 40 years time, we would still like to be sitting in the garden on a balmy summer evening, the voices of our loved ones in our ears and the aroma of our MONOLITH in our noses.

Even if we can‘t achieve everything individually, we still want to do our part. For a better, greener world.

Netflix Chef's Table Star Dario Cecchini is a new Monolith Brand Ambassador.

Monolith welcomes the world's most famous butcher as new brand ambassador: we welcome Netflix star Dario Cecchini.

He is the man who has already publicly butchered a pig to the sounds of Hell's Bells. Where "butchered" is actually not the right term, when Dario Cecchini sets the knife with surgical precision and maximum respect for the creature and makes wonderful delicacies from the animal. For the king of beef, his philosophy has always been the "from nose to tail" concept of holistic processing. He is a master of his trade, considered the most famous butcher in Italy, if not the world. What he does can be called craftsmanship. But art would be at least as apt. For, despite all the hell’s bells, Cecchini is a subtle, cheerful and affable person and not a butcher who celebrates a martial appearance with a butcher's blade.

Family tradition

Even though Dario Cecchini is a world star for a man of his profession, his down-to-earthness sets him apart. He is a butcher in body and soul, the eighth generation of his family to follow the same path, and proud of his history. He was influenced not only by his father's craft, but also by his grandmother's culinary skills. These are still his roots. His place is behind the sales counter of his small butcher's shop in Panzano in Chianta. This is in Tuscany, and the Tuscan culinary tradition is also what Cecchini lives and loves. Not just with regional specialties in his butcher's shop, but also in his restaurants Solociccia and Officina as well as with his Cecchini Panini Truck. One of its many specialties is the Bistecca Panzanese

Cecchini, Netflix Chefs' Table star and morer

People from all over the world come to shop with Dario Cecchini. And, of course, the charismatic butcher hasn't been completely hidden from the media. Cecchini became a Netflix-Star when the company dedicated an episode of Chef's Table to him, in which he was able to present in detail his philosophy and his very own way of living his dream. Long before that, none other than Anthony Bourdain had set out to meet Cecchini in Panzano. Accompanied by a camera, of course.  Countless newspapers and magazines have also written about Cecchini and his history over the years.

Working with Monolith

The fact that Monolith and Dario Cecchini have now come together is thanks to another of our brand ambassadors: René Kalobius, who also lives in Tuscany and has appreciated the advantages of a ceramic grill for many years.

Because that's what it's all about. For Dario Cecchini, too, the monolith has turned out to be a perfect grill, on which a whole menu has been created. The monolith not only fits his way of cooking, but it also fits wonderfully into Tuscan cuisine. And so it is a very logical step that we, who build ceramic grills with the same love of traditions as Dario Cecchini is a butcher, now follow a common path. And we look forward to many great dishes from the world's most famous butcher.

Barbecuing is about timing, and sometimes timing requires a degree of patience. HOW DOES THE BBQ GURU WORK?

The BBQ Guru is now available in three different versions, each of which does its job; they control and regulate the temperature inside the ceramic grill. A thermometer inside the grill measures the temperature of the fire. In addition, depending on the BBQ Guru version there are 1-3 temperature meters for the barbecue itself, which measure the core food temperature and adjust the intensity of the fire accordingly.

The computer in the BBQ Guru uses the temperature data inside the grill to adjust the air supply to the fire automatically and instantly. A more detailed description of how it works can be found here on our website. As the Monolith is weatherproof and well insulated, the temperature control works in all weather conditions, in both summer and sub-zero temperatures. Naturally, the BBQ Guru is equipped with the latest technology and can now be controlled quite easily via app.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHEN USING THE BBQ GURU?

The BBQ Guru is extremely easy to use and requires neither special knowledge nor a complex installation. The fan can be installed in the ceramic grill without any tools, or on versions such as the Monolith LeChef BBQ Guru Edition, it may already be installed in the kamado. The operating instructions are easy to understand and the BBQ Guru app makes access to all functions even easier.
