Can my cover fade?

Our Monolith covers are equipped with first-class
UV protection to minimize fading or discolouration caused by intense sunlight or prolonged UV exposure. However, despite the use of state-of-the-art UV stabilizers, we cannot guarantee permanent
prevention of colour fading.

Why do fine cracks, also known as craquelure, appear?

In accordance with our guarantee conditions, we would like to point out that fine cracks in the glaze, known as craquelure, can occur during the firing process of the ceramic due to the different expansion coefficients
of the glaze and the base material. These cracks are unavoidable and are even deliberately accepted, as they help to make the ceramic more resistant to temperature fluctuations. Crackle cracks therefore do not constitute grounds for a complaint.

However, if ceramic parts break out or pieces of glaze
chip off, please contact our customer service so that we can help you further.

How do I make sure that the lid of my Monolith ceramic grill lies evenly on the body?

Heat and operation of the Monolith ceramic grill can cause the felt pad under the clamping rings to shrink. As described in the operating instructions, it is important to check the two Allen screws on the clamping rings regularly and before the first
use. It is often
sufficient to retighten the two clamping rings to ensure that the lid is firmly in place.

If this is not sufficient, we will be happy to send you instructions on how to adjust the lid.

My smoking unit opens by itself when it is shaken or moved - what can I do?

In the first batch of Classic, Junior and Le Chef models delivered in 2016, a smoking unit was installed that did not yet have a locking mechanism. This can lead to the flap opening on its own due to vibrations or transportation of the grill.

In this case, we will be happy to send you a replacement smoking unit. To fit the smoker flap, proceed as follows
:

  1. First loosen the two nuts of the smoking unit on the inside of the body and
then remove the complete unit to the front.
  2. Insert the new unit and refasten the washers and nuts. Do not overtighten the nuts,
as this can lead to stress cracks in the ceramic.

How is the protector stone used correctly?

The protector stone is placed on the bottom of the
ceramic body in the fire box. Its function is to prevent the grill from getting too hot on the underside, which reduces the risk of stress cracks in the
body.

It is important to note that the grill must not be operated without the
protector stone. Complaints due to damage caused by not using the protector stone can unfortunately not be accepted
.

Does the Monolith ceramic grill maintain a constant grilling temperature?

Thanks to the storage capacity and the large mass of the ceramic, the MONOLITH grill keeps set temperatures absolutely constant, meaning that frequent readjustment of the temperature is rarely necessary. Only very large quantities of meat that are placed in the grill in a cool place may occasionally
require the temperature to be adjusted several times.

For even easier temperature control, especially
for long jobs, low & slow cooking or overnight, I can recommend using a BBQ Guru from our range of accessories. This automates the temperature control, which significantly simplifies the grilling process.

How much charcoal does a Monolith ceramic barbecue use in winter?

Charcoal consumption at low outside temperatures is
only minimally increased, as the MONOLITH is made of extremely heat-resistant ceramic
and has excellent heat insulation and storage capacity. In
this area, the barbecue is clearly superior to any charcoal or gas barbecue made of metal
.

How do I use the MONOLITH charcoal grate correctly?

The MONOLITH charcoal grate is coated with a protective varnish,
which burns off the first time it is used. This varnish is environmentally friendly and
harmless and only serves to protect against corrosion.

It is important to note that when using the charcoal basket, the charcoal grate should always be placed under the basket in the firebox. This is because the open structure of the basket concentrates the heat downwards, which can lead to stress cracks in the ceramic
base of the body.

What are the advantages of the Monolith charcoal basket?

The Monolith charcoal basket is an extremely practical
accessory that also features a divider
on the Classic and Le Chef grill, which can be used to set up a direct and indirect grilling zone.
Here, only one half of the basket is filled with charcoal and
ignited. In combination with the split deflector stones,
the charcoal basket offers further versatile setup options.

A major advantage of the charcoal basket is that it makes cleaning the barbecue
easier. Once the barbecue has cooled down, you can simply shake off the
ash and small pieces of coal and refill the basket with fresh
coal. The old charcoal can be reused without any problems.

The charcoal basket is compatible with all models, including
models prior to the 2016 model changes. However, it is important to
note that the charcoal basket should not be operated without a charcoal grate and under no circumstances without a
protector stone in the barbecue. This is because the
open structure of the basket concentrates the heat strongly downwards,
which can lead to stress cracks in the ceramic body base.

Why do the fire ring and the firebox have slots / expansion joints?

The slots in the firebox and in the fire ring serve as
expansion joints to prevent stresses and stress cracks that can occur in these components
due to the
extreme temperature fluctuations during barbecue operation. It is important to understand that stress cracks are not a defect
and that the firebox can still be used as normal.

Why has the spacer been changed from model year 2016 and how does this change affect grilling on my Monolith ceramic grill?

The spacer has been changed from model year 2016.
This adjustment means that the lowest grill level is now also at the level of the top edge of the fire ring for
indirect grilling, as with the
Le Chef model. This change is intentional, as it creates around 12 cm of additional
space at the top of the grill. This allows the optional second level, which
is flush with the top edge of the lower part of the body, to be used, which
significantly increases the cooking space. This makes it possible to grill larger
pieces of meat such as turkey, duck, goose and much more.

With direct grilling, the grid is still placed directly on
the fire ring, which remains unchanged. Alternatively, we offer the grill raiser as an
accessory, which corresponds to the old spacer of the pre-2016 models
. This grill raiser raises the grill grate accordingly so that it is flush
with the top edge of the body. The grill raiser can be purchased from
specialist retailers.

Is my MONOLITH grill frost-resistant?

The grill ceramic is fired at high temperatures
and is completely frost-resistant. In very cold outside temperatures, it is advisable
to heat up the barbecue slowly to reduce stresses in the ceramic
. It is important to store the barbecue in a protected place or to use
our cover to prevent moisture from accumulating in the barbecue
.

How do I avoid flame strikes?

During operation, the lid of the barbecue should first be opened about 4-5 cm
so that the oxygen can slowly enter the barbecue. If
the grill lid is opened quickly, the sudden supply of
oxygen can lead to flames in the charcoal. This effect increases
the further the air inlet opening is closed.

It is recommended that you wear barbecue gloves and stand
to the side of the barbecue while the lid is being opened. If
there is a burst of flames, you should close the lid and the supply air and
exhaust air openings to smother the flames.

What is the correct torque for the clamping rings on my Monolith ceramic grill?

The clamping rings should be tightened firmly enough so that
the two lugs through which the Allen screws are guided tilt towards each other
. It is important to check the clamping rings regularly for correct fit and
tension.

How do I set the lid valve on my ceramic barbecue correctly?

The airflow cap or lid valve should be placed on the body with the
Monolith logo facing the handle. It is
normal for the cap to have play to prevent it from jamming
during temperature fluctuations. This was deliberately designed this way. The temperature
is usually regulated exclusively via the daisy wheel or the small round
cast iron valve.

The lid is normally only opened when heating
(to use the chimney effect), when cleaning or pyrolyzing at high
temperatures and possibly also when baking at high temperatures. The
small valve does not change when opening and closing the lid. After
about 4-5 grilling rounds, a light film of grease forms on the cast iron, which
protects the cast iron from corrosion and makes the parts difficult to move. Even
when the valve is fully open, the setting remains stable so that
nothing changes when opening and closing carefully.

Is the paper test for a perfectly fitting lid efficient?

In various barbecue communities, the paper test is often recommended as a
means of checking the lid for leaks. A sheet of
paper is placed between the body and the lid and then pulled out. At
the points where the lid does not fit correctly, the sheet of
paper can be pulled out more easily.

However, we do not consider the paper test to be a reliable
means of testing the actual tightness of the grill. Instead,
we recommend the following procedure: Heat the barbecue to an ideal temperature of
110°C indirect heat. Then add smoking chips or pellets to
the barbecue and wait until smoke develops. Then close the top
lid valve completely and continue to wait. If the lid
does not actually fit correctly or the felt does not seal properly,
smoke will escape from these points between the body and the lid.

If smoke escapes, we will be happy to send you detailed
instructions on how to adjust the lid.

How do I set the exhaust air valve with BBQ Guru correctly?

When operating the BBQ Guru on the Monolith ceramic barbecue,
recommends closing the exhaust air valve approximately ¾ of the way. After you have fitted the adapter to the
grill and connected the BBQ Guru, light the charcoal from
above, insert the appropriate accessories (deflector, grate), connect the
oven sensor and clamp it to the center of the grill grate. The cable can
easily be laid between the lid and body, with the felt seal
preventing damage to the cable.

The guru now starts the regulation. It is important not to generate
excessive embers, as this could overheat the grill. At
the beginning, the temperature may be slightly higher before it stabilizes after a certain
time. It is recommended not to open the lid during the
start-up process, as this may cause the appliance to over-regulate and
produce too many embers.

If the temperature in the barbecue is too high despite the correct settings
, you can reduce the air supply at the slider of the fan / Pit Viper half
to reduce the amount of air that the Guru blows into the barbecue.

Further information can also be found in the corresponding operating instructions for the BBQ Gurus at
, which we will be happy to send you on request
.

How do I use the Monolith cover hood correctly?

Insufficient air circulation and humidity can lead to
the formation of mold in the grill, corrosion on the metal parts of the grill
and damage to the bamboo side tables and the bamboo handle. To
prevent this, it is advisable to occasionally remove the cover from the
barbecue for ventilation, especially if the barbecue will not be used for a long time

What are the differences in the grilling capacity of the individual Monolith models?

The following quantities of pulled pork (whole pork necks) can be prepared at the same time with the
different models:

  • The Classic Grill with the optional second grill level can grill 8 pork necks at the same time,
provided that the starting material is taken into account in standard sizes of 2-2.5 kg
    per neck.
  • The Le Chef grill offers significantly more space and can even accommodate over 40 kg of neck at a time, as confirmed by customer pictures.
  • It is recommended to occasionally swap the necks between levels during the grilling process to ensure they cook evenly. This is not due to large
temperature differences between the levels, but because the
outer necks may cook faster than those in the middle,
due to the mass of cool meat.

Can I upgrade my older MONOLITH grill model with the SGS system?

The MONOLITH Pro series offers a completely new
internal design. Although the external dimensions of the body have remained the same,
the SGS system (Smoke & Grill System) and the new firebox can also be retrofitted in older appliances. It may be necessary to replace the fire ring in older models, as the cut-out for the smoking rail is not suitable.

The SGS system consists of a frame, a ring and
two grate halves.

How are probes from a digital thermometer or a BBQ guru correctly inserted into a MONOLITH grill?

For digital thermometers or BBQ gurus on the MONOLITH grill
, the sensor cables can easily be fed through between the body and the lid
. The felt seal is thick enough to ensure that the cables are not damaged. However, when closing the lid, it is advisable to ensure that this is done gently and without sudden
movements in order to avoid damage.

Care & maintenance

How can I clean and maintain my MONOLITH cast iron grill?

The MONOLITH cast iron grill should be cleaned when hot using a
brass wire brush. Wear suitable
barbecue gloves for protection to avoid injury. It is then advisable to rub the
grate thinly with a high-heat oil or spray with a food-safe release spray.

To prevent corrosion, the cast iron grate should
only be cleaned with hot water if necessary and never with detergent or soapy water. If rust does occur, remove it with a
wire brush and rub a thin layer of high-temperature oil onto the grate. Then bake the rust at temperatures of around 250°C to form a
protective layer that protects the rust from further corrosion.

You can repeat this process if necessary until the cast iron grating has a deep black color throughout. The
resulting layer also serves as a non-stick coating, which means that food sticks less and less to the grill the more often you use it
.

How do you clean and maintain the felt seal of a MONOLITH barbecue?

The felt seal is a wearing part and requires
careful handling. When cleaning the grill with a grill brush, make sure that the seal is not damaged. No grease should drip onto the seal, as this can lead to ignition and damage
. The seal can burn at temperatures above 450°C.

A replacement felt gasket can be obtained from the trade
. To replace, the old seal can be removed with a spatula or
ceramic hob scraper. Care should be taken not to damage the glaze on the outside of the body and lid. The adhesive residue can be carefully removed with fine sandpaper.

The replacement gasket is self-adhesive and is glued to the edge of the body and lid piece by piece, starting on the back of the grill. It is important to ensure that the seal does not protrude inwards, as this can lead to an increased risk of fire.

How do I prevent corrosion and rust on my MONOLITH ceramic grill?

All fittings and screws on the MONOLITH grill are made of stainless steel. Although stainless steel is generally less susceptible to oxidation and rust formation than other types of steel, it can still
occur. Flash rust can form if the material comes into contact with rust particles or other rusting materials. Wind or spray water containing rust particles can also spread these particles everywhere.

It is important to remove flash rust as quickly as possible to prevent major damage to the material. Various
care products and rust film removers are commercially available and can be used for cleaning
.

In accordance with our warranty conditions, please note that
stainless steel components such as the grill grates can become permanently
discolored due to high temperatures, which is known as tarnish. This discoloration does not constitute grounds for a complaint. Under favorable conditions, rust film may also form on the stainless steel surfaces of the metal parts.

Why is mold forming in my ceramic grill?

If the ceramic grill is not used for a long period of time,
high humidity, moisture penetrating from outside and
unremoved food residues inside the grill can lead to the formation of mold on the ceramic and on the grill grates. This mold is basically harmless. You can remove it manually with a spatula or brush
.

To remove the mold, heat up the grill so that the moisture can evaporate from the ceramic. Slowly increase the
temperature and allow any residue to burn off. The heat will destroy any
fungal spores.

It is also advisable to remove any remaining charcoal from the barbecue if it will not be used for a long time. The charcoal can draw additional
moisture into the barbecue, which can encourage the formation of mold.

How can I clean my MONOLITH grill thoroughly?

To clean the MONOLITH grill in the event of heavy soiling
or grease deposits on the inside of the ceramic, we recommend heating the ceramic grill to 450°C for 10 minutes. It is extremely important not to leave the grill unattended during this time. Afterwards, the
air inlet and outlet valves should be closed and the grill left to cool down. It
is crucial not to heat the grill to even higher temperatures, as this can cause the felt seal to ignite and damage the ceramic components.

During high heating, all organic
residues will burn off, which can then be easily removed with a hand brush or brush. The stainless steel grill grates should be treated with care if they are frequently pyrolyzed
as they can become weakened and annealed over time. They should therefore be brushed and cleaned when warm after grilling.

It is important to note that no
deflector stone or pizza stone should be placed on one of the grill grates during pyrolysis, as this can lead to heat build-up. The cast iron grid and plancha must be removed before pyrolysis, as the extreme temperatures can damage the cast iron.

How do I clean and maintain my MONOLITH hotplate / plancha?

The MONOLITH hotplate should be cleaned with a brass wire brush when hot. Please wear suitable
barbecue gloves to avoid injury. It is then advisable to rub the
plancha thinly with a high-heat oil or spray with a food-safe release spray.

To prevent corrosion, we recommend only cleaning the fire plate with hot water if necessary and never with washing-up liquid or
soapy water. If rust does occur, remove it with a wire brush. Then rub the plancha with a thin layer of high-heat oil and bake at temperatures of around 250°C. This creates a
protective layer that protects the plancha from further corrosion.

You can repeat this process if necessary until the plancha has a deep black color throughout. The layer formed also serves as a non-stick coating, which means that food sticks to the plancha less and less with increasing
use.

How do I properly care for MONOLITH bamboo side tables and handles?

The bamboo components of the MONOLITH ceramic barbecue are
glued to be waterproof and sealed with an environmentally friendly clear varnish, which
usually offers protection against soiling and discoloration. However, the
high temperatures in the grill can cause the bamboo components to dry out
and shrink, which in turn can lead to cracks in the varnish. In addition, UV radiation, marinades and barbecue sauces can further damage the lacquer. If condensation or rainwater then penetrates the cracks that have formed, this can lead to discoloration of the bamboo components.

To prevent this, the bamboo components should be thoroughly cleaned and dried after barbecuing and regularly treated with a suitable care product. It is also advisable to use the cover to protect the components from external influences. Please follow the instructions for the correct use of the cover at
.

Troubleshooting & error correction

How do I deal with cracks in the firebox and fire ring?

Cracks in the firebox and fire ring cannot be completely avoided due to the
extreme temperature fluctuations. To counteract the resulting stresses, both elements are provided with an expansion joint. This joint generally serves to buffer most of the stresses in the material.

Despite these measures, further
cracks can still form. However, once cracks have formed, they generally do not
become larger or longer. This does not affect the functionality of the barbecue and the fire box and fire ring can continue to be used without
hesitation. This is merely a visual defect. We therefore recommend that our users continue to use the components.
This recommendation can also be found with other manufacturers of ceramic barbecues.

We also advise against removing the fire box and the
fire ring from the grill when cleaning the grill, as this can also cause stress cracks in the material.

Note: On MONOLITH Le Chef models prior to 2016, the cast-iron charcoal divider can cause damage to the fire box if it is too tight in the fire box. The
divider expands due to heat and can burst the firebox. In such a case, we will be happy to send you a shortened cast iron coal divider.

How do I solve clamping problems with the flap of the smoking unit?

Due to the high temperatures in the grill, the flap of the smoking unit may occasionally
be slightly deformed as the material expands. In most cases, it is not necessary to replace the entire
smoking unit.

To rectify the problem, please follow these
steps:

  1. Pull the flap of the
    smoking unit forward.
  2. Loosen the knob or handle on
    the flap. There is a
Phillips head screw on the back of the knob that may need to be held
with a screwdriver while you unscrew the knob.
  3. Remove the oval plate
    from the flap.
  4. Carefully push the flap
backwards through the body and remove it. The flap has
2 small lugs on the underside that fit into the side guide slots of the
smoking unit. Make sure that the screw for the knob is not
    lost.
  5. Place the removed flap
upright on a suitable surface and use a hammer to carefully compress the
material slightly on the sides of the flap. Make sure
that the lugs are not bent.
  6. Check the progress
and repeat the process until the flap is no longer jammed.
  7. Slide the flap with the
tabs back into the guide slots on the inside of the body and push
    it forwards.
  8. Replace the oval plate
and screw the knob or handle back on.

How does a break or crack in the cast iron grate occur?

High temperatures can cause stress in the material, which can lead to cracks and fractures. Normally, the cast iron grill can continue to be used even if it is cracked. It is important to heat the grid slowly in the grill and not to overheat it. Also avoid cleaning the grill using extreme temperatures or pyrolysis.

What can I do if the spacer is jammed and the deflector blocks do not fit?

Due to the effect of heat, it can occasionally happen that
the spacer becomes distorted so that it jams in the fire ring or the insertion of the deflector bricks requires increased force. In
such cases, you can bend the spacer accordingly using pliers. If this does not remedy the situation, the part will be replaced under our valid warranty conditions.

It is advisable to remove the spacer during pyrolysis cleaning of the
grill, as the high temperatures can anneal and weaken the
material.
